FROM THE AUTHOR
A few years ago I began working on a second edition of my book, 'Get Well, Stay Well', first published
in 1988. I had learned many interesting and surprising things about the health consequences of testosterone deficiency during the
preceding five or six years and that hormone was supposed to have been nothing more than the subject of an additional chapter.
As I worked on the book, however, I was also treating an increasing number of patients in my medical practice with testosterone.
It seemed there was no end to the unexpected things I was uncovering about the adverse health effects of testosterone deficiency,
and to the numbers of my patients who turned out to have symptoms of this disease. The subject ultimately reached a point of such
breadth and importance that it became obvious that a book exclusively about testosterone deficiency health issues was warranted.
My purpose in writing this book, therefore, is to share my past nine years' experiences, discoveries,
conclusions, and speculations, about the role testosterone plays in the overall well-being of adult males and females, young and old.
This includes both sexual health and, even more importantly, as I've discovered, non-sexual health. I must emphasize that I present
observation, opinion, and my own case reports. Nothing in this book is the product of controlled medical studies.
Testosterone has become a popular topic in the media lately, primarily because of either its improper
use to enhance athletic performance, or because of its substantial ability to restore and heighten sexual feelings. There are,
however, many, very serious, non-sexual health issues intimately related to deficiencies in this hormone. These problems have either
been not recognized or simply ignored by the medical community. I was one of these "testosterone-ignorant" physicians during over thirty
years of my medical career.
Testosterone deficiency affects essentially everyone of both sexes as they age. It erodes our sexuality
until it's non-existent. It weakens and debilitates, robbing us of the energy and ability to enjoy our lives. It has an intimate
relationship with such serious common health problems as osteoporosis, type II diabetes, depression, chronic anxiety, fatigue, and
congestive heart failure, to name just a few. From young adults to the geriatric age group, this disease will ultimately affect the
health of virtually every man and woman.
In “Testosterone Deficiency The Hidden Disease” you will learn something about the normal effects of
testosterone and where it stands in the “steroid” family of hormones. You will learn of my astounding, even mind boggling, journey
of enlightenment during the past nine years as the full scope of this disease gradually became clear to me. You will come to understand
the two major reasons that this extremely common and debilitating disease has been swept under the rug, namely the currently accepted, and
erroneous, “normal” laboratory values, and, more importantly, the confused and biased official Federal Drug Administration approved literature
on testosterone which terrifies patients and health practitioners alike. Although there is a comprehensive sex therapy content, most of
the book deals with the non-sexual health effects of the hormone deficiency.
The full story of this long ignored disease is yet to be written. Even in the few weeks that have passed
since the book went into production I’ve encountered yet another medical problem that might turn out to be related to testosterone
deficiency. What is certain is that this disease will, at some point, affect the health of essentially everyone reading these words.
